As tens of thousands of rioters gathered outside a hotel in Sweden yesterday and attempted to lynch a Jewish woman for daring to sing in public, we watched climate activists join the pro-terror mob.
Radical Islamists don't want women (or men) to sing, dance, or express themselves. We know this from the actions of the Islamic Republic and its proxies that seek to terrorise innocents and destroy democracies. They are testing boundaries to see what they get away with. If we allow it, they will come for Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, moderate Muslims, atheists, agnostics, women, Indigenous peoples, the LGBTQ2S+ community, and everyone else who is not a radical Islamist. Those of us whose families died in the Holocaust have seen this pattern before and know where it ends up.
I know some join these mobs because they think they are doing the right thing. For those who genuinely believe this, however, it does expose a lack of research which they have the agency to investigate but choose not to pursue. Witnessing this lack of evidence-based research in academia has been as startling as it is enlightening.
Speaking of academia, UVic's encampment and more than one of their schools (along with the support of some faculty and staff) released statements demanding that our administration remove "Zionist academics" from the university:
As we know by now, "Zionist" has been repurposed in these times as a thinly veiled code word for Jewish. The above demand is an attempt to remove Jewish academics from our campus. Thinking this is a ridiculous proposal or an implausible goal doesn't mean it should be ignored. We've seen Jewish students and faculty blocked from campuses, libraries, and classes in America— from Columbia to UCLA and beyond—and these same tactics are now being proposed at Canadian universities.
There's very little I can do about this, other than being one of many who is willing to have conversations about this with anyone open to peaceful and respectful discussion. I can’t ignore that I have more to learn. What I do know is that every group of people has a right to participate in the climate movement, academia, or any other areas of life.
While I am grateful to those who started this movement, I can't condone the actions of climate activists who encourage others to join them in fostering violence and terror. I hope and pray they will find their way to a path of peace. I do believe more will be revealed in time that exposes every calculated piece of propaganda seeking to deceive us. Truth can act as a miraculous conduit for change.
The need for climate and environmental health is not about any individual, organisation, or even generation. As such this is a long-term, multigenerational movement of principles, not personalities. This isn't about me or you or anyone we know—we do what we can do while we do it so every future generation, without exception, can have a chance to live the best possible life.
This is week 244 of fasting and striking from working and shopping once a week for the climate, and we're not going anywhere.
