News from the Future: Tarot Card of the Week

The many types of landscapes at the Queen’s feet and reaching out far behind her allude to the earthiness of this card. As a Pentacles card, the Queen of Pentacles is generally ruled by Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn), and is specifically aligned with Capricorn. Her gaze is focused on the coin, which demonstrates an interest in the practical and financial aspects of life.

Interpretation: “The Costuming of the Court Cards”

Court cards include Queens, Kings, Knights, and Pages. They often represent people, inner aspects of ourselves, or both if we are mirroring someone in our lives. Each court card, and some of the Major Arcana cards that feature characters, can represent another person who plays a role in your life (past, present, or future) or a role you are playing. If you choose the Queen of Pentacles, it might be that someone plays that role in your life, or perhaps you are being asked to consider whether or not you are playing that role or will need to take on that role in the future. Whether a card is about the past, present, or future depends on where it ends up in the spread. On a basic level, if you do a three-card reading the third card you pick up from the deck might represent someone in the future.

Imagine someone is zipping on the costume of the Queen of Pentacles in the image of the card above. People play the roles of Court Cards for many reasons, including as a way to get their needs met, as a survival or coping mechanism, or simply as a form of self-expression that matches the goals of that period in their lives. At some point, that role may no longer serve a person, especailly if they are actively seeking personal transformation. At that point, the costume is unzipped and replaced with another. A Queen of Pentacles can become a Queen of Wands, Cups, or Swords at different times in their life. If you have an astrological chart that represents a variety of elements (Earth, Fire, Air, and Water), you may have played some or all of these roles at some point in your own life. Within each lifetime, we have choices and also tendencies that shift how we function, behave, and are percieived in the world.

In some readings, and depending on surrounding cards and the question that was asked, the Queen of Pentacles Reversed can be a warning about someone who is self-absorbed or acting selfishly out of insecurity or greed. This can also represent someone who is a financial opportunist or who mismanages money.

When Queen of Pentacles Reversed is applied to one’s own life, it can be about working independently, creating your own financial plan, negotiating more time for working from home instead of commuting, physical self-care, or finding a work-life balance. This card sometimes asks if work or household duties or other work tasks can be shared or changed to free up more of your own time for independent endeavours.

"Internal, External, and Universal Meanings in Readings"

Tarot cards can emphasize an external event that will affect your life, an aspect of your inner self that a spread might be encouraging you to look at, or a past, present, or future world event. Whether a card is offering a message about your inner or outer life, or something that is happening or will happen in another part of the world, depends on the intention you set before you shuffle a deck. When I do a weekly, monthly, or annual reading for everyone I ask for the card that will define that time in the news and also in people’s personal lives. Sometimes world events echo a trend of the times, and in a microcosmic way, some people will reflect or be affected by those trends, too.

The meaning of the reading will depend on the question that was asked before you (or your tarot reader) shuffled the cards. If you are getting a more general reading, such as a Celtic Cross spread to paint a broader picture of your life, the meaning could be internal, external, or both. Sometimes what you are going through may be experienced by a group, so there could also be a universal change that is happening in your life while something of the same theme is changing on a universal level. Each card can carry multiple meanings, even within one reading.

When I shuffle the cards for the News From the Future posts, I ask for something that will define U.S. and World News for a certain period of time, which could mean the card will represent a day, week, month, year, or sometimes a decade or century in the future. What will happen in the 2030s? Pick a card. What will the main theme be in the 22nd century? Shuffle the deck and pick another card.

Individual Interpretations: “The Neverending Stories of Many Magic Lives”

Of course, different people will get different cards after asking the same question. That completely makes sense to me, as there will be more than one theme in a day or even a millennium. Each card can be like a cell in a storyboard, building on and telling a story of your life or a tale about the world we live in or where we are headed. If you or your reader feel more details are needed, you can continue to pull additional cards to build on the meanings of the initial cards in your spread. The only caution here is to check your motives. I find that pulling more cards until you get the answer you want will not work. The cards can help if you are open to heightened awareness, even if the truths revealed are not what one wants to hear. Tarot cards can be a catalyst for change in those who are willing to grow.

On another level, each card in and of itself contains multiple meanings. Tarot cards have endless meanings because they can be applied to any past, present, or future situation. The content of a single card potentially interacts with other aspects of your life, including waking and dreaming experiences, your natal chart, an accumulation of previous lifetimes, and that magical, inexplicable element of the unknown that somehow makes tarot make sense for who you are and what you need to know today.

World News From the Future

In future World News, the Queen of Pentacles Reversed signals problems that can arise from mismanaged finances in large institutions. This card in its reversed position can also indicate an overemphasis on materialism and also a misallocation of basic and needed resources. There could be financial problems and instability of income could be emphasised in this week’s world news.

This card signifies responsibilities as much as it is highlights priorities. Sometimes the answer is to consult with experts about the things that seem to have temporarily gone out of balance until they become manageable again.

Science, Religion, Information, and Transportation

Further into the future, World News will reflect material changes as a result of the changing signs that will rule Pluto and Uranus that will diminish the power of Queen (and King) of Pentacles Reversed types. When Pluto in Aquarius (Coming Soon to a Cosmos Near You!) intersects with Uranus in Gemini from 2025-2033, we can expect an implementation of revolutionary informational methods, including the distribution of literature via new kinds of libraries and school systems. Current attempts to ban books and suppress educational access in parts of the U.S. will seem ridiculous even a couple of years from now, when information will become more immediate and easily available than ever before.

Short-term, group modes of travel will also become more available and accessible, thanks to inventive techniques that reduce travel time while making movement (and movements!) increasingly socially gratifying and community-oriented. Scientific inventions will be on the rise in a neo-Enlightenment era that reflects the attraction to reason and logic that was trending in the late-eighteenth century. The online misinformation of today will ignite a reaction in the opposite direction, which means that critical thinking and the citing of sources is bound to become more popular than blind faith. We can expect an consummate clash between religions and science during this period.

U.S. News From the Future

In U.S. News from the Future, the Queen of Pentacles Reversed refers to shallow, self-centered behaviour that will be uncovered in political spheres. It will seem like large organisations are “getting away with murder”, so to speak, but this energy has the potential to shift significantly after March 23rd when Pluto enters Aquarius. People in positions of extreme power who seem untouchable now will have to face a reality check when they are simultaneously challenged by large groups. As more activists challenge laws that favour corporations over people, subsequent legal changes can foster the power to protect individuals instead of rewarding leaders of large corporations who have been enabling planetary destruction for decades.

Pluto in Capricorn from 2008 to the present has brought about a deepening of late-stage capitalist corruption that is especially evident in a lack of access to U.S. healthcare, inhumane prison conditions, and a scarcity of social resources, but that is also mirrored in other countries. This acute imbalance is starting to shift in some areas even as it intensifies in others. On the verge of transformation, old ways of thinking will amplify in an effort to continue, but these traditions will be eclipsed by newer and healthier ways of living. The life of plants and animals are an extension of humans and we are an extension of them, despite media-funded propaganda about a profit-driven, opposite narrative that emphasises division. Separateness is an illusion, and that is not just hyperbole because ecosystems depend on each other to survive. Basic environmental science reveals that life is more interdependent than independent. Therefore, division leads to destruction. Harming others harms ourselves, not just karmically but also in a very direct way because we need the species and ecosystems that exist in order to survive.

The new way of life will look like the casting of a different play that underscores themes of progress, justice, humanitarianism, support, and friendship. Family life will be particularly emphasised in future U.S. culture and news. On the one hand, there will be a progressive movement to create families of friends; on the other, a patriotic return to the past with an emphasis on genealogy and children. We can see both playing out even now, through occasional human interest news stories.

Future News for You

In general, the Queen of Pentacles Reversed offers an opportunity to evaluate or reevaluate financial priorities, or to organise or reorganise a practical aspect of one’s life.

If this card resonates more deeply with your own life, there can also be a feeling overwhelmed or possibly overworked. There might be one or more distractions and self-care could consequently be elusive. Basic domestic or work tasks could seem out of reach or might need to be put off for other priorities. Sometimes this is a card of a caregiver who needs time off to get their own life in order.

In particular, this card may ask if work or household duties can be renegotiated or changed to a different schedule, or if some work tasks can be allocated to free up more of your own time for independent endeavours. It might be a time to make your home into a sanctuary again, even if that means light cleaning. Alternatively, the Queen of Pentacles Reversed can be about a particular person who has become entitled, unreliable, or possibly greedy. Similarly, if someone is jealous, possessive, or acting only in their own interests without taking others into consideration, this card can encourage boundaries with that person. That might mean a flexible boundary rather than a rigid one, depending on the situation.

If there is a feeling of being smothered, this is an opportunity to reclaim space, which sometimes just means gently and lovingly setting a simple boundary because having a little space can strengthen the relationship. A boundary can be a caring act for you and the other person because it helps to preserve what you have by reducing resentment. Or, if this person is a boss or business partner, it is possible that they are cutting corners or has trouble managing their tasks or schedule.
