The following meditation can set or reset a tone for the day. If you’re willing to access an altered state of consciousness, greater happiness can be within reach at any time. This meditation is one way to realign yourself with the feelings you want to have today.*
First, close your eyes. Inhale slowly, exhale even more slowly, and continue to slow down your breathing patterns every time you become aware of the breath throughout this exercise. Think about the concept of “joy”. Notice if there are any shifts in your body or emotional state just from thinking about that feeling. If you just bring the notion of joy to your consciousness, you’ve already reawakened the emotion to some extent, as this is a feeling you have known before which is already a part of your unconscious habits. Anything that is embedded in your unconscious mind from prior experiences will provide you with an emotional library from which you can choose which feeling to focus on and reawaken into your present day.
For instance, choose a quality you would like to have: perhaps love, compassion, kindness, confidence, helpfulness, connection, creative inspiration, abundance, or something else you aspire to just for today. Now let that quality be embedded into an imaginary sunlight above you. If you don’t tend to visualise, that’s fine. You can just feel or sense that sunlight is there. As the sunlight reaches contact with the Earth, you notice or feel its reflection on a body of water. Maybe this is a lake, river, or stream. You get to choose. Now picture or imagine that as the sunlight reflects upon the lake or river or stream, it is infusing that body of water with the same emotion or experience you seek to have more of in your life today.
Resting on the earth next to the body of water, you may notice a beautiful, ancient-looking goblet or chalice. Take a deep breath and exhale as you relax more deeply. Pretend that you’re picking up that goblet and dip it in the body of water. As you take a drink from the cup, allow it to infuse your entire being with the feeling you want to have. Rather than just thinking of the word, feel the love, compassion, kindness, confidence, helpfulness, connection, creative inspiration, abundance, or some other feeling you want to have moving throughout your body as you continue to drink the water. Feel that feeling transferring through every cell of who you are, permeating your entire being, just as this feeling flows through that body of water.
If you wish, you can dip your cup in the water again and take another drink to gain a deepened and heightened sensation of whatever emotion it is you are seeking. Allow yourself to be more deeply relaxed, and when you’re ready open your eyes. Come back to a full waking state of consciousness but bring with you all the feelings you gained from this exercise today. May you find all you’re looking for in this day and more.
