Examination and Meeting Meditation I, Continued
“Close your eyes. See or sense the outcome you would like to have for this exam or meeting or other situation. Maybe you will see a paper with the number representing your grade or you’ll feel the good feeling you would like to have during this meeting or sense the feeling you’ll have of jubilation at the end of this situation that you’re about to enter into. Now, overlapping that positive vision or knowledge or feeling, choose the emotion that you would like to have upon completing your course or your project. Perhaps it will be joy, success, completion, transcendence, relief, or anything else. There is no incorrect answer and no wrong emotion.
Continue to let that positive feeling permeate your mind. If you can, also sense the expansion of that feeling onto a physical level throughout your body. As you do this, you may notice that you become more and more detached from the number that is connected to your grade, or profits within your business. Anything numerical, anything quantifiable, just let go of that for now. Anything that you sought to acquire at the beginning of this exercise, see if you can let go of that outcome because you may notice that you start to feel increasingly content with where you are now because you’re reconnecting with the emotion you’ve been seeking all along.
Very often those numbers, those outcomes, those quantifiable notions that we have, that we want to achieve, represent what we think will bring us to the emotion we want to have, but you have a one-way ticket to those emotions. You can get right to the point, reawaken those emotions that you have in your consciousness from prior experience, and then you won’t have to focus as much on the numbers, you’ll let go of that outcome, and ironically you’ll often get more of what you’re seeking. That brings you back to that emotion again, so that emotion continues to reawaken and rearise in your consciousness if you just connect back to it. Focusing on that feeling…that’s what really matters.
So often we want the particulars of an outcome, and that’s normal, such as the number represented by a grade, the monetary savings within a bank account, or some other measurable achievement, and understandably so, because those are societal expectations that have influenced all of us to some degree. But if you skip ahead to the feeling you want to have, [that] is really what we’re looking for, and it’s not the result of the grades, it’s not the amount in the bank account. It’s beyond the material outcome. It really is about that feeling that we want to connect to, the security that we think we’ll have or the acceptance we imagine will come our way, or the time we will have in our lives once we get to where we want to be or we reach that monetary goal.
If it’s time you want, that you’re looking for, if it’s early retirement that you want to achieve, what is the feeling you want to have in retirement? What is the emotion that you hope will arise from having more time in your life? Maybe it’s that you want to be more creative right now. What feeling does creativity give you? What does that self-expression bring to you? Again, cut to the chase, get to the emotion. You will save yourself time because then the pressure comes off of needing to reach that number of the grade, of the savings, et cetera. And by letting go of the outcome you free space in your mind to become more focused and then ironically are closer to achieving what you want.
Albert Einstein suggested that it might be possible to reach into the future through the conduit of the present when he comforted a grieving friend in a letter by writing: QUOTE “The distinction between the past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion” UNQUOTE (Fölsing 741). The relativity of temporality and our connection to concepts of time allows us to borrow past or future feelings and share them with ourselves in the present moment. This gives us some control over our lives because we can connect to those emotions that we want to have if we have known them before. And certainly, we’ve known many emotions before. They can be very general and apply to so many situations, so you have a whole encyclopedia of emotional states in your unconscious mind that you can borrow from at any time.
We can’t control the nouns in life, such as people, places, things, test results, outcomes at work, outcomes of meetings, the way that people perceive us as a result of those grades or outcomes of meetings, et cetera. But we can choose our ABCs: attitudes, behaviours, and choices. We have control over that, and how we act and what we choose begins with a feeling that ultimately determines our perspective and changes our behaviour. And that behaviour does affect the outcome and the way that people react to us.
Overall, we get more of what we focus on, so if you need to refocus during an exam, if you need to shift your concentration during an important meeting, feel free to reignite that positive feeling you have chosen today. You can do it at any time. It’s a feeling that you will be able to take with you as you complete that meeting, as you complete that exam, as you get to your next goal. So, moving forward with absolute confidence in your ability to achieve that feeling—and rediscover your chosen emotion at will at any time—when you’re ready you may open your eyes, and slowly come back to an awakening state of consciousness, feeling refreshed, relaxed, revitalised, energised, and ready to move forward on this next goal. Because that goal is an extension of your emotions.
So show up in the moment, with your feelings, knowing you have the confidence to move forward. That situation that requires your concentration is going to be so much more enjoyable for you as you move forward through it, in the present moment, already feeling the feeling you want to have, and not relying on that situation to bring you to the emotion that you’ve had before. So now knowing that you have all you need to move forward on this next action in your life, connecting and staying reconnected to a higher consciousness as you bring that positive feeling with you, I wish you all the best in feeling what you want to feel and in your exam, meeting, situation, and in having full and complete access to enjoyment in your day ahead, and all the days ahead”.
