Altered States in Audio: 9 of Cups Tarot

Meditation 4: Smith-Waite or Rider-Waite Deck

The 9 of Cups tarot card is about making a wish and being satisfied with the outcome. The following meditation is inspired by the 9 of Cups and encourages connection to the self and others through heightened appreciation and as a precursor to bringing about greater happiness in your life.

“Hi, I’m Kyra Oser, and this is ‘Altered States in Audio: 9 of Cups Tarot’. In this series, I take you on a tour of different tarot card decks from around the world using altered states of consciousness.

These dream journeys, guided meditations, and hypnotic explorations will help the cards communicate to you in a personal language that is unique to who you are and what you seek. By returning to these cards and recordings over time, you will find that new messages and guidance will continue to be revealed to you.

Part I: Connecting with the Senses: Awaken the Happiness and Success Factor of the 9 of Cups

First of all, you can close your eyes or relax your eyes into a soft gaze. This part of the 9 of Cups exercise is about connecting with sensory experiences that bring you happiness.

First of all, listen to a pleasant sound in your mind. It’s okay if you don’t actually hear it, it’s enough to pretend that sound is there or just sense that sound is being made. It could be music, bells, the first sound you hear in the morning, a bird, maybe the wind or the crackling of a fireplace. Just relax into that sound for now.

Now let go of that sound focus in on another sense. We’re going to do this one sense at a time. Next, think of an image that you would associate with success, completion, or fulfillment. Let yourself feel the positive emotion that you would personally associate with this vision.

And shift your mind to something else you’re grateful for but this time let it be a scent. So now you’ve let go of the image, you’ve let go of the sound, knowing you can come back to them at any time. And maybe now you’ll be thinking of a favourite food, the smell of fresh air, the scent of the ocean; maybe trees on a nature walk in the woods.

Now, enjoy another favourite food or beverage (if you already chose food for a favourite scent, you can choose another food now). Just recall in your mind what the texture would be like, and what the flavour of that food is if you can. there are spices you can smell. This is a combined sensory experience in that when you’re tasting food you will likely be smelling the food as well. And this is one part of the exercise where we’ll have two senses that are being reawakened at the same time.

And just take that sensation of eating a food that brings you happiness and let it enrich you. Let that enjoyment be there for you knowing that you don’t have to always seek out something externally to have internal emotion associated with it that you want. You can reawaken happiness at any time from your inner meditative experience. and just take that and let it enrich you, let that enjoyment be there for you.

So much of happiness is about self-care and sometimes we can get through an internal experience and we prompt that self-care just by giving ourselves the time to meditate or to recall pleasant sensations. That in itself can enhance our well-being. It doesn’t always have to be about buying something, doesn’t always have to be about consuming something. Sometimes meditation is enough.

And finally, can you feel the touch of something in nature? So now letting go of the taste, of smell. Maybe reaching out in your imagination to feel the leaf of a tree or the bark of a tree, a flower, or maybe you’re running your fingers through the body of water. And if you do that, feel the water flowing against your fingers as it rushes through, prompted by the wind, and just let yourself take in and enjoy the pleasantness of any one of these sensory experiences.

It feels so good to connect with nature. The more you do this exercise, the more you may find you’re engaging with the senses when you’re consciously aware. Ironically, by being more present, you will have greater access to the past and future for possibly understanding mysteries of the past or making predictions about the future. Speaking of intuition, the next part of the exercise is about enhancing your intuition with the 9 of Cups tarot card.

Part II: Expanding your Happiness Connection to Others

In the next section of this exercise, you use that enhanced awareness of happiness to connect more deeply with your intuition. When we’re not distracted by worries and problems, when we’re feeling more fulfilled and therefore not yearning as much for the past or future, it becomes possible to be more present and thus more aware of intuition. Gratitude is an intuition enhancer.

Imagine now, what do you think your inner light looks like? If your body had a light or if your body was to become a body of water what shape would that light or that water be? Does your body look calm or does it have movement on the surface? If it is light or water, does it have movement like when the wind blows the ocean and makes waves? If so, if there’s movement, if the light or the water doesn’t look calm, are able to slow down the movement and get it to be more still? At the same time, can you also sense the slowing down of your thoughts?

Notice again that energy or light or force of nature that’s emanating from your being. Picture or imagine that light expanding and connecting to other beings or parts of nature. What emotion do you feel as you and your energy become a part of other natural elements? Rest for a moment in that feeling and let it infuse you with a sense of safety, security, connectedness, and support, which are all qualities that are brought to us by the 9 of Cups tarot card.

When you are ready, feel yourself infused with the happiness, success, and fulfilment which have been offered to you by the 9 of Cups. You may find that when this card comes up in a reading, you have gained a deeper understanding of its meaning. Gently open your eyes when you are ready, returning to a full state of awakened consciousness, with the assurance of security and well-being that this tarot card has given you by meditating on its images today”.
