If something isn’t working the way you planned, there may be a part of that situation beyond your control.
However, the figure in the foreground still holds the majority (3) of the 5 swords. In those swords is what he can control: what is within his reach, namely himself. Those qualities can be described as his attitudes, behaviours, and choices (ABC’s) about the situation.

Tarot Tutorials: History’s Mysteries Solved!
Tarot card readings can feel like an episode of a detective show starring you, the reader, the person you are reading for (the querent), and an extended ensemble of characters from the spirit world. As a reader, you are given clues in the cards and through your extrasensory perception from helpers in the spirit world. Those clues can be interpreted by you and confirmed by the querent. If there are missing pieces to the story, you might draw more cards. Each card is like another puzzle piece, telling a story about different times and places.
Have you ever given or received a reading where you continued to shuffle the cards to get more information about a question or topic, or reshuffled about another topic, only to keep drawing the same card? This can be exasperating or exciting, depending on how little or how much you want the message that card is trying to tell you.
What does it mean when the same card keeps coming up in readings? Does that indicate a problem, a good sign, or something else?
We’ll explore this topic of repetitive tarot messages and clues in today’s episode of:
“The Case of the Recurring Card”
I hope to talk more about this subject again, but for now…what might it mean when a card keeps coming up in a single reading or reading after reading?
In my experience, this could be for one of many reasons. Sometimes I’m happier being in denial than facing reality. If I’m reading my cards and not interested in hearing the message a card is trying to convey to me, that card will sort of playfully howl at me by showing up again and again, no matter how many times I shuffle. That’s when I may question if I need to listen more closely to the message. Or if I’m enjoying my denial, I might not question it at all and just ignore the signs!
Of course, this only applies when I’m giving a reading to myself. When the reading is for someone else, it’s easier to be objective.
Other times, I may be giving a reading to someone else and the card shows up again. Yet in this case, the same card is being drawn as an answer to different questions. Why would that be?
This is one of the wonderful ways that the cards can work. They may be trying to us that the same issue is a factor in more than one area of our lives. This is good news, as taking care of that issue could solve more than one problem.
Sometimes that card will appear in reading after reading, perhaps days or weeks later. This can mean the theme of that card still calls to you to be heard. If you look more deeply into its meaning, you are more likely to find the answer or solution you seek.
For instance, if I keep getting The Sun card during a time when I’m seeking more brightness in my life, it is a reminder that happiness is around the corner…or maybe it is already here, but I just don’t see it yet. The Sun shows me something hopeful in material form that I can’t yet see internally, and in that way, a tarot card can act as an instigator for facilitating manifestation. They are our helpers!
“Finding Gods, Goddesses, and Guides in the Cards”
I find that the “case of the recurring card” can be a joyful phenomenon. Each card is an expression of language and can connect us with a feeling, concept, or person.
When the Court Cards or figures in other cards don’t represent someone in our lives, they may represent an aspect of ourselves, but we can also read them as deities. Cards with what appear to be human figures can be consulted like the priests or priestesses of ancient times who connected people with Gods and Goddesses for messages.
There may be spirit guides involved in your reading, whether your own or those of the person you are reading. Have you ever sometimes sensed the presence of a third, unseen party in your reading?
Spirit guides can also be seen in the cards. They might appear as one of the figures in any of the cards that have humans or other beings. Some of the most obvious guides are the form of The Hierophant, who is a Priest, and the High Priestess.
Since their function is to be spiritual guides, I think of each of these cards as a third entity entering into the reading, ready to confer wisdom to all who seek their advice.
There also might be qualities in the imagery descriptions of the cards themselves that mirror polytheistic Gods of many religions. Some will pray for guidance before beginning a reading, whether from guides or Gods. I say prayers before beginning readings, and one of those prayers sets an intention to invoke whatever and whoever can be of help to the person I am reading.
How will you know if there is a God or Goddess in one of your cards? My experience has been that the more I study mythology, the more I make connections between the qualities of the Gods and the descriptions of the Court Cards. When you become familiar with Gods of different religions and myths, you’ll naturally make associations between them and the cards. If you’re interested in mythology, Joseph Campbell might be a place to connect with those stories in a secular way.
I thought I was coming up with this concept of finding Gods in the cards on my own but I Googled it and alas, there are guides to the Gods in the cards! This is good news for me and you, as some of the work has already been done! There are blog posts that make associations between Gods of various cultures and Rider-Waite or Smith-Waite tarot cards. I find that adding mythology or Gods to tarot interpretations can be a fun way to deepen a reading.
This doesn’t discredit monotheistic interpretations, as expressions of one higher power or one Creator can also be found in some of the cards, especially throughout the Major Arcana.
One of the shortcuts to learning about Gods and Goddesses in the cards is to follow the four suits. There are qualities in the Cups (Water Signs) that may bring Aphrodite to mind, such as the Queen of Cups:
Swords can be associated with the mind, and therefore the Queen of Swords may be associated with Goddesses like Athena:
Wands are related to Fire Signs, so they may be warriors like Freyja, Vesta, or Brigid. She can be seen in the Queen of Wands:
An Earth Sign Pentacle card can connect us with Earth Gods and Goddesses, such as Tara, Demeter, or Gaia. Look for her in the Queen of Pentacles:
So how would this search for the Gods in the cards work in a tarot reading? The how is simple: mention an association between a God or Goddess and the figure in the card you are reading when you notice it. Perhaps the parallel myth or story of a God will be of benefit to the querent’s situation.
And when would you mention an interconnection between a tarot card and a God, Goddess, or mythological character?
In terms of when to bring up a God or Goddess, I find it is only necessary to bring up the association when it will be helpful to the person I am reading. Anything on any topic that is not helpful to them should be left out. The best use of the cards is to help the person you are reading. Perhaps by extension, you will also help others in their life. Everything that is mentioned should be of service to that person, and never for our gain as readers. The moment the reading becomes selfish or self-serving is exactly when it stops working. Ego compromises accuracy. Therefore, selfishness or self-seeking has the opposite of the intended effect!

“Cards, Religions, and Evangelical Christians”
I also take into consideration the belief system of the person I am reading. If they worship a monotheistic God, I intend to respect that. I read for people of all religions or none, for people from various Indigenous backgrounds, and agnostics and atheists. The readings still work, whether you have a religious belief system, more than one system, or none at all. I’ve read for some Evangelical Christians in the U.S. and the readings work for them, too, even though that organisation largely discourages readings. Some of these querents weren’t sure at first if getting a reading would be okay. It’s not for me to decide what another person should believe, and I don’t judge them for their religion.
A little-known fact about me is that I had in-laws (and even some family who weren’t in-laws) who were Evangelical Christians in the U.S. I no longer do, but for many years I did. I didn’t talk about it much because I was embarrassed to be associated with that organisation. I never practised that religion and was skeptical about it, but now I’m embarrassed that I was embarrassed! It isn’t personal when a family member changes their religion, even if the entire family except for you does. If you have a personal history like this, it’s nothing to be ashamed of, whether it was in your family or if it was you who was part of a religion you no longer believe in. It’s all a part of the journey that got you to where you are. And the variety probably makes your story even more compelling.
Perhaps this aspect of my family history is why I could be accepting of Evangelicals who came to me for tarot card readings. They found something that worked for them in that religious organisation, based on the needs of their lives at the time and the organisations that were local or accessible to them. That doesn’t mean I’m not critical of the religion itself. I am very critical of its shortcomings, especially leaders of megachurches who seem to be in it mainly for the money. There is a difference between spiritual practitioners making a living so they can be free to practise their art and someone who seeks to enrich themselves more than to help others.
I would not bring up Gods and Goddesses in someone’s reading if they profess to be monotheistic because that does not align with their beliefs. It wouldn’t serve a purpose, and my purpose as a reader is not to challenge someone’s religious choices. Whether or not a person’s religious community advocates for tarot readings, people should be able to come to you for help and know that the readings will be both private and confidential. This allows people to get what they need from the cards and share only with you without fear of reprisal or exclusion from their families or communities.
You may be wondering how I ended up becoming a psychic tarot card reader when I had Evangelical Christians in my family. Well, it wasn’t any great feat on my part. I didn’t have to overcome any indoctrination because it didn’t happen until my 20s. While I was raised to learn about many religions, and I am ethnically and culturally half Jewish, I was trusted to find a belief system of my own, or none at all if I preferred.
I’ve mentioned this before but it’s important to have this conversation, especially in these times when so much of the world is seeking to learn about our tiny community. There are only about 15 million of us surviving in the world, and of those tribes, I am a member of the smallest. My father told me that our ancestors thousands of years ago were temple musicians and were given priestly and other ritual temple duties. More specifically, he told me that we are descended from Aaron, the first High Priest of Israel (and spiritual advisor to Moses). Many men in our family continued to be named Aaron, including my great-grandfather. Part of what I do during readings is funneled through the cards but most of it comes from the ancient and shamanic traditions that my father and grandmother passed down to me.
There are about 500,000 of our surviving members worldwide who are descended from the Tribe of Levi (males are called ‘Levites’ and females are ‘bat Levi’). There are only about 12,000 of us in Canada, where I currently live. One of the descendants and members of the Tribe of Levi is Naama Levy, the 19-year-old woman who was brutally assaulted and kidnapped on October 7th and is still held captive in Gaza.
There’s a theory that the reason for us being such a small tribe is possibly due to persecution. The primary tribal function of the Levites and Bat Levis was spiritual. It’s part of the dark side of human nature that people will attack what they don’t understand. Despite the repeated attempts to kill off our tribe, and all the tribes of Judea, my ancestors managed to pass on tribal traditions to me that originated in those temples several thousand years ago and developed throughout our exile in Germany and Eastern Europe.
Judaism is an Indigenous culture, an ancient civilisation, and an ethnicity. The religion is something that comes from ancient traditions going back thousands of years. There are Jews who don’t practise the religion. And some people convert to Judaism but didn’t inherit the ethnicity. They are all still Jews. Jews are a tribe, so what it means to be a Jew is a tribal matter. As with other tribes, it is up to the Jews to decide what that means and not people outside of the tribe. Are Indigenous traditions and rituals always considered to be a religion? When does a religion become a tradition? Perhaps that’s a discussion for another time. I’ve somehow taken you on a tangential timeline, tracing backwards from contemporary born-again Christianity to ancient Judaism. Now let’s go forward to the present again and talk about Doreen Virtue!
“The Dual Legacy of Doreen Virtue”

Others, like Doreen Virtue, went from writing self-help spiritual books and prolifically producing oracle cards to being baptised as a born-again Christian. While I do not want to judge anyone for their religion, her radical change from self-help guru to born-again Christianity was bound to be commented on and is something I’ve written and wondered about in a previous post. It brings up some interesting questions about the meaning of an author’s work over time. What, if anything, does her conversion mean for her cards, books, and legacy? Do you still consult with her cards? Does this change in her life invalidate her former work? Can we appreciate someone’s tarot cards and written works from a period in their lives that they no longer identify with? And how do we approach the criticism of works from an author’s earlier life after they undergo a religious conversion or even cognitive change?
Perhaps those are questions to investigate in another post, as I want to get to the main purpose of this article: your monthly tarot card and astrology readings!

February Tarot Readings for Every Sign
Aries
Aries, the Knight of Swords can ignite (igknight?) your ambition. This knight can be action-oriented about plans or verbally engaging in debates. A theme of this card is assertiveness. Sometimes the Knight of Swords is a reminder that it’s okay to be assertive about a goal you want to achieve, while still being flexible about the outcome. Since the swords represent the life of the intellect, these actions will begin with clear ideas. If the action involves communication, this could be a sign of upcoming discussions or group connections that involve vocalising opinions and ideas in a public forum.
True Node in Aries is conjunct Chiron in Aries on February 19th. The Knight of Swords in combination with astrology for this month indicates that you have the power to reframe the past by adopting a positive perspective with your mind (the sword), whether on your own or with a helper…as long as you are ready and committed to making that happen.
The New Moon in Aquarius on February 9th will give you a respite from this ambition, so it’s a good time to connect with friends or groups, whether in person or online. Towards the end of the month, the energy of the Knight of Swords may slow down. At this time, you may find a personal or spiritual retreat (even if it is a retreat within your own home) to be of benefit as you replenish and recharge your energy.
Taurus
Taurus, the Queen of Cups can represent your nurturing side, whether that is directed towards others or expressed as self-care. She is someone who pays attention to her emotions, as her toe is dipped in the waters of life that shift as emotions change. She can be creative or compassionate. When she comes up in a reading, something emotional might be unclear. There could be missing information. Yet through it all, psychic powers or intuitive feelings may guide you, even as she gazes at the mysterious cup, perhaps seeking guidance or inspiration as you do in the cards. She seems to trust her intuition.
The Queen is surrounded by angels on her throne and despite appearing to be on her own in the card, she is never alone. She is being watched over by these angels and always anchored by the ocean which connects many lands. The Taurean part of the card is in the rocks on the beach that ground her feet. Even when she is lost in feelings or connecting to other worlds through the vast sea, there is a part of her that returns to share those cosmic mysteries and adventures with those who dwell more often on land.
The New Moon in Aquarius on February 9th might bring a surprise or unusual event. It may seem that things are moving forwards even as they’re moving backwards, as in the adage, “two steps forward, one step back”. Yet any setback will be temporary. Uranus continues Direct in Taurus this month, and we have a First Quarter Moon in Taurus on February 16th. When the Queen of Cups coincides with these astrological shifts, you may have an opportunity to benefit from integrating intuition, inspiration, or imagination with a new, unique relationship to the land, or a venture that is close to what you consider home.
When Mars enters Aquarius on February 13th, you could see some progress in areas of your career, volunteer work, or studies, especially if you bring something unique or unusual to your efforts. The inspiration that the Queen of Cups offers can benefit you from February 13th through March 22nd, when Mars enters Pisces. Considering that Venus is your ruling planet, Venus moving into Aquarius on February 16th may be beneficial to your social life and career or volunteer work.
Gemini
As a Gemini, the Suit of Swords connects with your Air Sign. This King makes decisions based on intellectual rationale. Unlike the Queen of Cups, he does not make plans as a result of his emotions. To him, feelings aren’t facts. He refrains from concluding if he doesn’t know all the facts. If this describes you or someone in your life, integrity will foster long-term credibility. The King of Swords seeks the absolute truth and will communicate what he objectively and scientifically observes, even if it isn’t comfortable for everyone to hear. Rather than indulge in imagination, he will continue to seek answers through research and experimentation.
The image in the card is male but can refer to any gender as the Court Cards are also capable of representing an inner aspect of one’s psyche.
In some ways, his rationality makes him similar to an innovator from the 18th-century Enlightenment movement. He can be a scientist, doctor, researcher, non-fiction writer, or simply a rational thinker who uses logic first and foremost in decision-making. In your own life, he encourages checking all the facts before deciding on a conclusion. This analytical process ends up being comforting, as reality can be better than some of the things we imagine. Reality and truth also give us a way to move forward, let go of imagined or projected worries, and put energy into the things we can control.
The Aquarian planetary developments of this month in connection with your own Air Sign, in addition to the Air Sign association with the King of Swords, will make you especially lucky in areas to do with writing, public speaking, podcasting, broadcasting, social media, or vocal activism. Vesta will be Direct in Gemini February 8th, possibly prompting a journey of research about health or science, and ultimately offering an opening to connect with others who share a similar interest in the pursuit of truth.
Cancer
When you draw the King of Pentacles card, Cancer, this can be a call to enjoy being in the moment, to appreciate your success, or to focus on abundance. If you’re seeking more prosperity, now is a time when you can visualise how that would look and feel for you, while strategising new ways to make it happen by taking small actions, day by day, in the material world. This can be as tiny (yet significant) an act of self-care, or as big as envisioning or taking small actions towards a business plan.
How does the King of Pentacles intersect with Cancer as a Sun or Rising sign? This card empowers your natural abilities to connect with home, heritage, family, or history. You may have good luck in more than one of these areas when it comes to the abundance at the centre of this card’s offerings, as long as you consult with experts to get the most out of creating the life you want.
This month could bring a resolution or something moving forward in your business, especially after February 13th when Mars enters Aquarius. While money may be a focus this month, some financial considerations may be more of a private matter for now, as the King sits alone on his throne with no other figures in the card. This is in contrast to the Ten of Pentacles, where money matters are discussed and shared in the family, at a community meeting, or in a business meeting setting. That sharing stage may be delayed for discussion at another time. There is a time and place for bringing up sensitive topics, so work out what works for you, with whom, and when.
