Tarot Card of the Month: Wheel of Fortune R

The Wheel of Fortune card features wingéd versions of a bull, lion, eagle, and an angel reading books from the Torah. In some interpretations, these beings stand in for the fixed signs of the Zodiac. A sphinx with a sword oversees a wheel that represents fate. A snake and the jackal-headed Egyptian God Anubis encircle the wheel. Clouds mean that all cannot be seen, at least not as of yet. The books represent wisdom and the sword denotes knowledge and alludes to astrological air signs. This card in World News suggests the appearance of a world out of control, especially in terms of climate events. In general, the Wheel of Fortune Reversed can signify delays or obstacles that create confusion prior to the discovery and application of solutions. If something isn’t happening the way you expected or on the timeline that you hoped, this card suggests that fate is intervening on your behalf. Disruptions may appear to be annoyances or inconveniences but they are mysteriously navigating you towards a better outcome than you expected or planned.

World News from the Future

In World News, there could be abrupt, startling financial changes, heightened climate disruption, recurring health issues, and a resurgence of military forces. World News this month may look like a world is spinning out of control. However, when you look deeper, you may notice that these events are a clear sign that radical changes are needed. If someone is not well, their body may produce symptoms which send a message that help is needed. When the world is out of balance, unpleasant symptoms will emerge to signify something needs to be done fast. The expeditious application of practical solutions can treat the human body. In this case, the “body” is the aggregate of the human species and all other species whose lives depend upon the actions of people currently holding a disproportionate amount of power. That power dynamic is out of balance and in the process of being interrupted as a precursor to needed change.

Acceptance of the past is another theme of this card. No matter what transpires in this month’s news, and correspondingly in subsequent months, news articles that lament what could or should have been done will waste the energy that is needed to improve the conditions that are causing these crises and catastrophes. If these unfolding situations can be approached with the spirit of amends by doing now what was unable to be done before, there is a much greater chance of producing the best future possible for all of us.

This card combined with World News in 2023, including in January, inspires the sound of hammers on nails, images of repairs to ships, anchors in the ocean, and the increased popularity of taking swimming and sailing lessons. Sidewalks melt and reform into new shapes by the end of a long summer. Summer heat will be referred to as “dreadful” in some news headlines, particularly in England and India.

Museum installations will reflect these times with themes of the art of destruction and reconstruction.

A surprise attack in an unexpected region, likely from Russia, escalates the war in Ukraine and causes more involvement from additional countries, even as Russia is losing overall and is doomed to lose in time, no matter how long they may try to delay the inevitable. One of these attacks may come from or be planted underground.

There will be a repetition in news articles of the analogy between what we are going through during the Anthropocene and diamonds that form under pressure. While people living through the climate crisis who were not the cause of this emergency will be referred to as “diamonds” in these articles, there will also be a movement against diamond mining and protests that demand royal families return jewels and even crowns to the colonies where they were stolen. There will be firm resistance to returning any crowns and that call will be refused due to the symbolic transference of power that would take place if royal crowns were to be relinquished. Growing criticism about the acquisition of royal wealth will be concurrent with demands that museums return stolen items to their rightful nations or even families, if and when those individuals can be found. Each time goods pilfered as a result of colonialism are returned, that act is another mark against the unjust labour buttressed by capitalism and a step towards increased egalitarianism for the majority of the world. It is no coincidence that the concept of work is being questioned at the same time as colonial structures are being dismantled.

U.S. News from the Future

In U.S. News, there will be circumstances that exceed the control of most people and elude the capabilities of some governmental agencies. This is not just in the U.S. but some of it could be starting here in a more visible and extreme way. One of those manifestations is through unusual storms, hail, and wintry conditions beyond the range of normality. While these external problems were not caused by the majority of people, some individuals will be blamed for not using their privileged level of agency to turn the tide. In this case, the tide is also literal as this is related to the rapidity of rising sea levels. The tides will literally turn and they will turn on us unless we turn around the use of fossil fuels very soon. The world is not changing quickly enough, not yet. January will show us why and how.

I had a dream about the Titanic the other night and there was no way to control the ship. It felt like I was on it with everyone else who was alive but people were falling off the edge. It was definitely not a past life memory. This was a future and sharply realistic feeling about a mass of people who would be thrown to the sea by climate events with little to no protection from governmental entities. It is not that institutions have no interest in helping, although some individuals in positions of power will not act at critical times due to inability, shock, denial, or all of the above. The climate crisis is a misfortune that has been maddeningly mismanaged and is on the path to becoming so unfamiliarly unrestrained that it falls outside the scope of previous human experience. The sooner action is taken, the more control will be possible in slowing or arresting climate events. That is when the Wheel of Fortune can turn upright again. This card is a warning that some tipping points are about to be reached sooner than predicted.

According to this card, there will be signs of a loss of climate control in and around January and more of these disruptive, sometimes “cataclysmic” events progress and resurface throughout the year. Holding onto the old ways could perpetuate suffering. Many will always live by the old ways and there will be no changing that trajectory for them. These are not easy times and this is how they cope. If someone is in denial that might be necessary for their psychological survival, at least at the time. Many of us are now aware of the reality of the climate emergency but our day-to-day lives haven’t changed much. It isn’t exactly easy to take time off during late-stage capitalism and that is a problem! Hence the slowly building solution of quiet quitting and the upcoming mass work strikes of 2023, all of which will be a positive development for the environment.

Meanwhile, what can be done about denial? Denials cause delays, and delays cause more of what we want to deny. It’s a vicious cycle until a state of acceptance can be accepted. Through adaptation to reality within the limitations of external circumstances, survival becomes more likely. Living amidst reality can be one of the most pleasant experiences. A realistic perspective can reveal the genuine value of all that we’ve retained, and all we gained along the way.

The first image is of clashes between large groups of protestors. I see these clashes escalating into sometimes bloody conflicts. On the other end of the spectrum, there will be mostly peaceful demonstrations about the climate crisis, equality, and equity. Justice is the theme of U.S. News in January and throughout much of this year. Yes, the fight for justice has been an ongoing struggle and noticeably so in the U.S., but 2023 is more of an obvious and visibly undeniable manifestation of justice-oriented problems. The demand for prison reform and justice for those who have been wrongly imprisoned, as well as increased voting, employment, and housing rights for former prisoners, rapidly grows into a much bigger movement this year.

The human rights of prisoners are becoming a mainstream concern that gains far more media attention than ever before. In 2024, this attention extends to the general public embracing better living conditions for those inside the prisons, particularly when it comes to the ways in which global heating and wildfire pollution will compromise facility infrastructure. The buildings themselves need to be updated but as for 2023, the release of prisoners for non-violent crimes, particularly related to drug use and sales, will be the main focus for human rights advocates.

Expect in-depth television interviews with people who are currently or were recently incarcerated in which we have the opportunity to get to know the humanity, dreams, relationships, and value to society of someone who either made a mistake long ago or was mistakenly accused of a crime they didn’t commit. A saying we can expect to hear in some of these interviews is something like: “one mistake does not an entire life make”. The struggle for prison justice reform shines the light on multiple problems, and one of them is reducing a person to one or some of their actions from a particular period in their lives instead of acknowledging that people can change when they want to and are willing to do the work. Additionally, a person’s increased presence outside of prison might benefit society and their own lives immeasurably if they are given a second chance. Personal stories with examples of the good deeds that someone did after benefitting from their release will also be highlighted in interviews and documentaries. Leonard Peltier’s case is one that will receive a lot of media attention this year as his health declines and the call for his release intensifies.

Of course, many of these articles and interviews will admit as a caveat, there are those who are too dangerous and who society needs to be protected from. Nevertheless, other than substandard living conditions which no one should be subjected to, violent offenders are not the emphasis of advocates for prison reform. This year is about seeking justice for the innocent and considering another chance for those who have learned and grown. We will start hearing more about this in and around January, but 2023 marks a time when gaining compassion for those who suffer from addiction or poverty will become more popular and eventually prevail.

The Light of Your Life

Everyone will be adapting together as we encounter the unusual and unprecedented circumstances of this year. In some ways, we already have even if we can’t see or appreciate it yet. You already adapted to a major pandemic. We are adapting to a changing climate with every passing season and year. There is nothing minor about this lifetime. You were born into a majorly eventful and historically consequential timeline.

What will the next phase of our adaptation look like in 2023? First of all, it will be necessary to implement creative solutions via unified groups that have a common goal of surviving on an individual level while also helping on a universal one. This new path will be a lot more spiritual than before. I cannot overemphasise how much more spiritual and meaningful life is becoming in this new era, particularly in light of the impending absence and transformation of some of our normal material resources. I meant that part about the absence and transformation of light both figuratively and literally as blackouts will become more common this year. I have been collecting used books over the past couple of years and I imagine I will be reading some by candlelight this year. My drawing utensils are sharpened and sketchpads are ready. Board games and card games will become more popular this year during power outages. And so will tarot cards!

Furthermore, these breaks from technology will benefit human kindness and kinship. I envision the rapid formation of new communities and combinations of present communities that wildly depart from anything we’ve known before. A more sociable and approachable period approaches after years of isolation. Without so many objects of fascination between us and to distract us, humans will find each other again and be fascinated by what unfolds. Perhaps the most comparable experiences for what is about to happen to humanity were the love-ins of the 1960s. Yet while I see some drug experimentation, the upcoming events will be more about spirituality than sexuality. The focus in this social movement of the mid-to-late 2020s will be more service-oriented than sensory. As a result, the shift this year is from the individual to the communal. As long as unity triumphs over individuality, the Wheel of Fortune can reverse its reversal. One thing is for certain in the coming chaos and commotion: connections are bound to deepen and people will become closer. In those incomparable moments of union, there will be not only consolation but also triumph through unexpected moments of profound mutual endearment.

Future News for You

When the Wheel of Fortune Reversed is applied to your own life, you are being challenged to see something as good luck. Look at a situation from a new perspective. In a sense, and like the card, turn the situation upside-down in your mind. If you are experiencing a setback or something is not going your way, consider approaching or responding to it differently. You can also reframe it, whether with the help of meditation or by asking for answers in a dream before you go to sleep. It might not happen that night. The insight you need might be revealed another night or even in a daydream. The answers you seek will be shown to you when the time is right and through the means that most suit your experience.

The Wheel of Fortune rotates, and like the wheel, each life has its fortunes and misfortunes; its challenges and triumphs. If you are experiencing difficulty, it will not be that way forever as the wheel of life continues to spin and circumstances will turn in your favour once again. The good fortune imbued in the upright Wheel of Fortune is supported by Jupiter's rule. As with the planet Jupiter, once the wheel becomes upright in your life, luck will once again be free to accompany you on your spiritual journey.
