March Tarot Reading: US & World News From the Future
Election Predictions & Solutions to Boredom in the 4 of Cups
Dear Reader,
I shuffled a deck and drew the 4 of Cups for our March tarot card reading. As you will see, this card can offer helpful information about overcoming boredom or reconnecting with gratitude. Boredom and disconnection from appreciation are part of human nature, and I imagine we’ve all experienced it at one time or another. Something wonderful about the cards is their ability to reflect universal states of mind that we all may encounter in our lives. A simple exercise at the end, including a tarot meditation, will offer a solution to one of the problems highlighted by this card.
In World News From the Future for March, the 4 of Cups highlights the tension between individuality versus humanity. For US Election Predictions, the image in this card demonstrates an unusual event.
If you’d like me to look more deeply into the cards for you or if you are seeking self-improvement through hypnotherapy, you can book a Zoom session with me here:

Imagery
A man sits under a tree on a clear day with crossed arms and crossed legs. His face looks as cross as his folded arms. There are mountains and trees behind him and green grass beneath his body. Three golden chalices are presented before him, and a hand emerging from a cloud offers him a fourth. He does not extend his hand to take that fourth cup but looks down as if to express that he is unimpressed with the additional option that is being offered to him.
Tarot Interpretation
Ennui, boredom, disenchantment, dissatisfaction, malaise, and melancholy are words that might define the tone of this card. The man under the tree already has three cups and is offered another, but he doesn’t look pleased with anything that is before him. Has he become too overwhelmed with options, or is he so used to getting what he wants that he’s lost his connection to appreciation? Or is it that he’s uneasy with life and incapable of feeling contentment or satisfaction, at least for now?
The good news with this card is that awareness can be a catalyst for adopting a healthier perspective. This is a card about a state of consciousness. It is a mood card that depicts an emotional disconnect. Since it is in the Suit of Cups, the figure’s mental focus may be on relationships or community. He could be on dating apps but not making a genuine connection with anyone yet. Maybe he just has malaise from too much time on social media. It is possible that TikTok has become TikToxic and he needs a break or to delete the app and diminish distractions, at least for now.
Sometimes the origin of dissatisfaction isn’t clear. Maybe a change is in order but the feeling of discomfort precedes any logical explanation. Perhaps something just feels ‘off’. That’s when we can turn to the image in the card for clues about how to shift this state of mind.
Solutions to Boredom in the Four of Cups: From the Material to the Spiritual
The figure isn’t entirely happy with the cups he’s been offered, nor with being given more, but he also doesn’t appear to be searching for more. He’s sitting under a tree, so perhaps he has slowed down and that’s a good sign. Instead of collecting more cups, he’s taken a pause. Maybe he is about to start meditating and already on a journey to encounter or rediscover tranquillity. Introspection can bring new insights that aren’t as apparent when we’re rushing around. In this way, he is on the way to recovering a positive feeling.
Another clue from this card is that his unhappiness seems to come from looking at these cups. No matter how much he has accumulated, it doesn’t feel like enough. While it’s a platitude to say this, I need to remind myself at times that materialism alone is never sufficient for making a person happy. The figure in this card is ready for an inner journey that could deepen and enrich his life. Since this card is in the Suit of Cups and not Pentacles, the place where he has been looking for happiness might be more in relationships than material items.
However, if your focus is more on wealth right now or if the 4 of Cups is surrounded by Pentacles cards in your spread, it could be both. It will be up to you as the reader or the recipient of a reading to decipher which area of your life is more intriguing to you right now.
Too many material possessions can become a distraction. Clearing out, selling, or giving away some of the things that are distracting to the point of disrupting one’s peace of mind can be a way of reassessing what we need. In this increasingly digital age, it is more possible to digitise some of the things that used to take up physical space. For those who hope to be nomadic, this might make the possibility of travel more feasible.
Imagine if one of the cups in the images was to be given away. The man could then move about more freely, reconnect with the world, and be touched by uplifting human-to-human experiences instead of being brought down by the material weight of distracting things.
This doesn’t mean to become an ascetic, only to reevaluate what is needed and what no longer serves us. Once in a while, I give away clothes that I haven’t worn in a while. Every time I do this I find items I love but hadn’t worn for months or years because they were hidden behind things I wasn’t using. Giving away one thing can support the rediscovery of another. In that way, I receive as much as or more than I gave in the first place.
If this card speaks to you or your client in the area of relationships, it can be a sign that if you search within you’ll find what you’ve been seeking through connection. This man doesn’t look happy with the cups that sit before him, but maybe that’s because he’s expecting the cups to bring him happiness. It’s possible that his discomfort doesn’t have anything to do with the cups at all. If he expected his relationships to make him complete, this card illustrates a pivotal moment when he remembers that relationships aren’t able to provide everything he seeks. In that way, this moment of his story is a call to a discovery of an inner or higher spiritual connection that can reconnect him to a feeling of wholeness.
The Dangers of Conformity and Freedom From Responsibility
Sometimes this card is about the opportunity of having many choices, but also the flipside of that, which is the anxiety of not being certain about which choice will be best. We can see some of that burden on the face of the man in this card. He is unwilling to reach for the additional cup he is offered, and his arms crossed and at rest indicate he is almost frozen by a disinterest in making a decision. This concept of feeling paradoxically confined by freedom is expressed in Sartre’s quote about the inescapable responsibility that comes with freedom:
Psychological issues arising from rejecting freedom are explored in Erich Fromm’s 1941 book Escape From Freedom, which deals with the tendency to be drawn to totalitarianism. It isn’t easy to be the one making choices about our lives and imbuing them with meaning but the alternative of giving that freedom over to an outside force, such as a dictatorship or authoritarian relationship, is rarely worth the cost. Enforced conformity subverts individuality, causing alienation that eschews unique societal contributions.
How this issue of relinquishing freedom in exchange for a feeling of certainty relates to future world news will be contemplated in the next section.
As long as the person in the image of this card is not suffering from clinical depression or medical issues that are influencing their emotional state, these are some examples of ways to shift a feeling of restlessness. If you are a reader and your client is facing a psychological or medical issue, they will need to seek help from medical professionals. As long as any medical causes have been ruled out, the meditation or hypnosis inspired by this card may reconnect the seeker with a renewed feeling of happiness, appreciation, or awe.
World News From the Future
What happens when the figure in the 4 of Cups gets tired of deciding which cup to focus on, or what to do next? This was the dilemma of some in the twentieth century who supported the rise of totalitarian movements. The support of some and the silence of many caused those who had no power in those systems to lose their freedom by being forced to live under those regimes.
There is also a spiritual expression of this political problem as we’ve seen when cult leaders attempt to exert control over religious communities. There is no singular answer in this life and no singular person who can give us all the answers.
Increased value and deeper truth can emerge when searching for answers through meditation and other forms of introspection. It also helps to seek counsel from various sources instead of getting overly insulated solely with people who will reinforce our cognitive biases. Inner searching and openness to discussion may prevent someone from blindly following a leader, no matter how popular or supported their movement may be at the time. The man in the 4 of Cups might be on the verge of a spiritual search, and perhaps he has already begun this journey.
Individuality, Conformity, and the Unity of Humanity
There is a positive and challenging side to the Pluto in Aquarius period that we’ve recently entered. It depends on other astrological factors but part of the negative expression is when people conform to the point of losing individuality or rejecting critical thinking. The positive side is when people join together for a well-informed cause and create a change while leaving space for questioning, debate, and accountability.
Every person is a unique expression in all time, so total conformity is antithetical to what it means to be human. Relinquishing uniqueness in exchange for societal acceptance can result in dehumanisation. We may appreciate our unique human quirks even more as AI develops. We will naturally seek to distinguish ourselves from machines. In contrast with Aquarius, a celebration of the individual is present in its opposite Sun Sign Leo, and expressed in the tarot card The Sun.
A problem that can arise with Pluto in Aquarius is the possibility of talking over or not listening to those who don’t share the same point of view.
Empathy relies on respect for individual self-expression. Conformity, as the opposite of individuality, inevitably compromises empathy. Herein lies a paradox about the pursuit of unity. How can we unify humanity without losing our humanity to conformity?
Impending Inversion of McCarthyism and Rise of Neo-McCarthyism
A danger in banding against conformity is that people can become conformist in their anti-conformity. We saw this in McCarthyism in 1950s America and the persecution of people believed to be sympathetic to Communism. I see a similar trend developing that will likely go in two directions. The first is a far-right reaction against a resurgence of Communist ideology which results in fascist tactics, and the second will be far-left political figures of more than one nation insisting on total obedience to their worldview.
The latter could result in an inversion of McCarthyism which shuns or bans those who don’t obey the direction of that group. The upholding of this system would rely on informants and reporting by those who would believe they are turning in the ‘disobedient’ for a ‘good cause’. We can see this tendency incrementally creeping into our online lives with people who anonymously report others on social media for expressing views antithetical to their own.
4 of Cups as a Critique of the Political Spectrum
Whatever you may think of those extreme ideologies now we don’t know every detail of how they will transmogrify. The irony is that a far-left faction whose core is intent on celebrating diversity is becoming increasingly conformist. Conformity is the opposite of diversity. The irony!
And of course, a far-right movement has been building for years that supposedly denounces government control yet contradictorily hands over power to strongmen leaders. Both ends of the political spectrum cry for freedom at all costs, yet if the ultimate cost is conformity, how will we have any freedom left to express individuality? This is part of the deception that authoritarian leaders employ as they promise freedom in speeches while gradually taking it away behind the scenes.
These movements are mirrors of each other as we can see in the horseshoe theory, and both end up giving away their freedom in exchange for different ideas of ‘security’. This reminds me of a Ben Franklin quote: “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety”. The interpretation of that quote can be debated. The part I want to emphasise is the danger of giving away too much liberty to anyone. A permanent loss of freedom is too high a price to pay for temporary relief from the burden of uncertainty.
These are predictions of what will be highlighted as stories in future news. This is a card interpretation and not a reflection of my political preferences. There will also be criticism of the performativity and inaction of the political centre. A discontent with every part of the spectrum is being highlighted in the Four of Cups. The figure under the tree could also be looking at the political left, right, and centre in each of those cups and struggling or refusing to make a choice.
Generally, World News from the Future combined with the Four of Cups highlights discontentment with the state of the world or particular world events. This is a card that underscores one of the challenging sides of Pluto in Aquarius. As old systems are questioned and transformed into something more community-oriented and connective, there can be despair in thinking the world isn’t changing quickly enough, for instance in problems like the climate crisis. Others may worry the state of the world will change into something worse. Yet one thing is certain: the nature of life is change and the man in the 4 of Cups won’t stay stuck in a state of unease forever.
A way to overcome the challenge of feeling disappointed that things don’t seem to be going the way you anticipated or hoped is to exercise patience and continue getting involved in ways that are helpful to all and harmful to none. Part of the solution to displeasure that sometimes accompanies Pluto in Aquarius is to get more engaged. Or if it is best for your health, perhaps you will temporarily disengage and take some time off to recharge or rethink about how you want to become or stay involved with a cause. This could be as simple as taking a day off from reading the news. More on this retreat from the news in the next section on U.S. News From the Future…
U.S. News From the Future
In U.S. News from the Future, the 4 of Cups encourages gratitude for what we do have. At this time, deep changes are occurring in government and religious organisations and this unsettled period can foster discontent. Some may withdraw from organised institutions while others become more tenacious in their involvement, sometimes to the point of zealotry. It’s easy to be wary of the problems that can exist in any government, and no government is perfect. However, sometimes for one’s state of mind, it helps to balance that criticism with a modicum of appreciation. Or at least take a break to clear one’s mind from all the News Noise. I find this hard to do as reading the news can be quite compelling and it’s a never-ending, potentially addictive drama. But we all need relief from the news cycle sometimes. Only then can critiques about politics be truly objective.
US Presidential Elections Update
Concerning the US Presidential Elections, the 4 of Cups looks like the face of voters who aren’t happy with the repetitive and binary choice we are being offered. It looks like the same candidates again. And yet, according to this image, two could be stepping aside and two others step in. It is as if there are stand-ins for the candidates. Who are the real candidates? Still, there is discontent. That is part of the nature of the 4 of Cups: a state of being in which none of the choices seem appealing.
What happens next is bizarre and unprecedented. Expect the unexpected.
If we look at the man in this card as a voter, the cups could be candidates. He’s crossing his arms and not choosing any of them. Yet a hand from above offers a new choice that wasn’t apprent to him before. Will there be a new candidate we can’t see yet?
On the other hand, we could look at the figure as the power behind a candidate. If the cups are interpreted as representing different parts of the political spectrum (right, left, and centre), how can he please them all, as well as a new, fourth element that threatens to throw off the balance of the voters he was expecting to court? Either way we look at it, there’s an unsettled feeling for both voters and candidates.
There is also an unseen power coming from the cloud, perhaps a force threatening to disrupt or postpone the elections.
This could feel like a period of limbo and living with uncertainty about who is going to lead this country. It’s an atypical and unique situation, at least when compared to all other previous US elections. And somehow, Florida may be involved in both critical and pivotal ways.
What the 4 of Cups does offer is a call to contemplation, and from there you might see or be shown the situation differently. More about what form that inner searching can take is outlined in the next section, “Future News for You”…
Future News for You
If the question you asked before you drew this card was about a relationship, one or both of you may have lost appreciation for the other. There may be complacency or a need to rediscover what you love and cherish about this person. Or perhaps you need them to value and appreciate you more, so this card might encourage a conversation when the time is right.
If your question was about career or volunteer work, that situation might be affecting your mood. It’s possible that you need to find something about it that makes you happy or add something to that part of your life that will be more challenging and interesting.
More generally, this card can indicate moments of apathy that are sometimes remedied with self-hypnosis or by connecting or reconnecting to a meditation practise that works for you. As I mentioned before, the figure in the card seems to possibly be on the verge of meditation. Is he taking inventory of his material goods, or just discovering they haven’t brought him the satisfaction he seeks? If he were to stop staring at those golden cups, he could transform into the meditation stance of someone communing with nature. His position calls to mind the Buddha under the Bodhi tree at the beginning of his journey towards enlightenment.
This figure is depicted at a moment of making a decision: he could continue staring at the cups, but they will only bring him more of the same mood. His other option is to withdraw temporarily from the physical world so he can regain a more optimistic perspective, or at least one that is healthier and more conducive to helping others.
This discussion brings us to the deeper essence of the card. Why is he so unhappy in the first place? It could be due to an external factor, perhaps an event or ongoing situation over which he has little to no control. Even so, is there a remedy to his apathy?
The answer lies in the image of the card itself, or rather what it is lacking. He is there alone, seemingly thinking about himself. He may feel that no matter how many cups are given to him, he will never be satisfied. But what if he reached out and offered one of those cups to someone else, as we see in the interaction of multiple figures illustrated in the 2, 3, 6, or 10 of Cups?
Earlier in this post we looked into the issue of seeking happiness from external relationships. Yet there is an exception to this, as giving happiness to others can bring us happiness in turn. The issue of the man in the 4 of Cups is that his arms are crossed, in a state of inaction, and waiting for others to bring happiness to him. An effective alternative would be to offer help to one or any of the cups before him, in which case he may find a joy in giving. In that way, he is prompted by the hand in the cloud to become like the hand in the cloud by mimicking its gesture and offering a cup to one of the cups.
If the man himself takes a cue from the divine hand of the cloud, he can transform into the hand that offers a cup to others and will metaphorically transmogrify into a cup himself. In giving of himself he can break out of his malaise and boredom, thus filling his cup with the good feelings that come from sharing.
Therefore, one of the answers to a problem emphasised by this card is being of help to others. Benevolence has the power to take our minds off of what we think is lacking in our lives, and paradoxically gives us what we lacked: the interactive and mutually gratifying art of giving.
Sometimes when I get this card for a client, I might suggest meditating on the answers provided by the 2, 3, 6, or 10 of Cups, depending on which of those they are striving to obtain at the time. One card’s warning of a problem can be tackled by meditating on another card’s solution…
…which of the tarot cards in your deck might be the antidote to an issue you are facing today? If you can think of one, meditating on its image or themes might bring some answers.

Funny thing- I pulled 4 Cups as my card of day this morning, and last night dreamt of the words “3 Cups”. I’ve coincided with Katie Ellen also. Then I learn about them from the pros!
Hope you are well.
